Thanks nandbytes for the links and everyone else who provided proof of folks running their A7 and NEX cameras on similar 9v supplies without any reported issues for long periods of time! Meanwhile, I'm leaning towards this being OK unless someone has reason to think otherwise beyond just speculation based on paper. Still would be nice if Sony could give us an official opinion on the matter. They work great on my GH2s for multi-hour event recording, and the GH2's battery is also 7.2v internally! So it would seem that perhaps the operating range of modern electronic devices are wider than originally speculated. Not the cheap kind in that ebay auction (I shared that link simply to illustrate that people are advertising using 9v supplies), but more professional models from Anker and the like with regulated digitally controlled modular outputs that report battery life remaining and everything. Meanwhile, to those who are concerned about the 9v battery supply being poor quality, I'm not worried about that as I already stated that I have experience with these in professional environments. Would have been a great suggestion if it were that easy, thanks anyway! Either way, that option is a no go unfortunately. Even if it worked while the camera is on, when doing video recording, I doubt very highly that a 5v USB feed would be able to charge the battery faster than it is being drained. So, yes- as already mentioned, the USB charging only works when the camera is powered off physically. He uses this set-up exactly for your purpose i.e. Please read this post on dpreview, tells exactly what you need for dummy battery set-up. Just wanted to get the opinion of the folks here. So, someone somewhere must think this is just fine to do. Has anyone feed a 9v DC supply to their Sony cameras before? A friend of mine who works in batteries tells me that he thinks 9v should be acceptable, and I've seen ebay kits selling dummy batteries and 9v supplies like this one: I'd like to do the same with an A7 series camera, but I spent a bit more on this than I did my previous cameras, so I'm a bit more hesitant this time around. I've done this to record time lapses and hours of uninterrupted video recording, despite the official battery being 7.2 to 7.4v. I've seen folks run Panasonic and Canon cameras with dummy batteries attached to 9v power supplies.
